    Consultant 'hiring' practices

Plenty of IT and development projects get completely botched by consultants. And while companies typically scrutinize new hires, they typically do very little to screen the experience and skill-set of 'expert' consultants brought in by well-known professional services firms.

Do you or your company do anything to validate the skills/experience of 'hired-guns' or do you just assume that if you're paying $250/hour for them that they're automatically worth the cost?
