    Ritual vs Understanding

As developers there's a ton of information that we need to keep straight in our heads in order to get our jobs done. I'm convinced that while most of us are really good at most of the things that we do, we also rely a bit too much upon 'ritual' to help us navigate some of the common tasks that we undertake.

Any good ideas on how to overcome this issue - especially in a day and age where just keeping up with your own 'domain specialties' seems to be such a task in and of itself?
